Land's End Chamber Ensemble


John Lowry (violin) is a native of Edmonton where he began his musical studies early with pedagogue Ronald Shean. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto and Yale University. His teachers have included George Neikrug, David Zafer and the eminent American virtuoso, Oscar Shumsky. He has been a member of such musical organizations as the Opera Company of Boston, Esprit Contemporain, The Amadeus Ensemble and the Athabasca Quartet. He was formerly Concertmaster of the New Hampshire Philharmonic and Opera NewEngland, and has been guest Concertmaster of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, and Edmonton Symphony. He has been heard frequently as soloist with the Calgary Philharmonic, and also recently with the Windsor and Edmonton Symphonies. Mr. Lowry was formerly on the faculty of the University of Manitoba and the University of Lowell, Massachusetts, and has also taught at Courtenay Youth Music Centre for several years. He has been Associate Concertmaster of the Calgary Philharmonic since 1987 and was Acting Concertmaster for the 1997-98 Season.

Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann
Born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Elizabeth received her Bachelor of Music from the University of Alberta where she studied with Helmut Brauss and continued her studies with Arie Vardi at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover, Germany, obtaining artist and chamber music diplomas. She returned to Canada completing a Masters degree with Patricia Parr at the University of Toronto. Together, Elizabeth and Marcel obtained a D.E.S.S. (Diplôme d'études supérieures spécialisées) in duo piano at the Université de Montréal with Jean-Eudes Vaillancourt and later completed post-graduate studies in the Solistenklasse in Hannover.
A native of Munich, Germany, Marcel Bergmann studied musicology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and piano at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover with Arie Vardi. After obtaining a Bachelors degree, Masters degree and Artist Diploma, Marcel received a scholarship from the Université de Montréal for specialized studies in duo piano. In addition to Marcel's many activities as performer and teacher, he composes and arranges music for theatre, television productions and for two pianos.
As a duo, Elizabeth and Marcel won first prize at the International Chamber Music Competition in Caltanisetta, Italy. In 1993 they became members of the young artists' roster of Yehudi Menuhin-Live Music Now and were prize winners at the 4th Murray Dranoff International Two Piano Competition. They have performed numerous concerts in the U.S.A, Canada, Italy and Germany and have made recordings for the CBC and several stations of the ARD in Germany. As founding members of the International Piano Quartet they had the opportunity to perform Stravinsky's Les Noces under the direction of Robert Craft and recently recorded the work with him at the Abbey Road Studios in London.
Currently on faculty at The Mount Royal College Conservatory, Elizabeth and Marcel have recently joined Land's End Chamber Ensemble.

Beth Root Sandvoss (violoncello) was born in Madison, Wisconsin where in her early years as a cellist, she studied with Margaret Christy. Ms. Sandvoss pursued further studies in Madison, Cleveland, and San Francisco with cellists Parry Karp, Alan Harris, and Irene Sharp. A champion of new music, Ms. Sandvoss was a featured artist in Hong Kongs Contemporary Music Festival where she premiered numerous works for cello. She has been a member of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the San Jose Symphony, the Madison Symphony, the Victoria String Quartet, and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Ms. Sandvoss has performed recitals and has appeared as soloist with orchestras throughout North America as well as the Far East. She has been recorded by RTHK Radio Hong Kong, WERN Madison, and CBC Radio. In Calgary, Ms. Sandvoss performs regularly with the13th Street String Trio, Land's End Chamber Ensemble, and Rosa Selvatica. She is a faculty member of the Mount Royal College Conservatory, and spends her summers teaching at youth music festivals in Canada and the United States, including the Canmore Music Camp, which she founded with her husband, Christopher Sandvoss.

George Fenwick (Artistic Director) is a composer, librarian, and violinist. A native Calgarian, he studied composition with Allan Bell, Quenten Doolittle and Greg Levin and received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Calgary in 1988. After obtaining a Master of Library and Information Science degree from UBC George was an Area Children's Librarian for several years with the Fraser Valley Regional Library in B.C. George was a guest composer at the 2000 Saskatoon Festival of New Music, and recent performances of his music include two premieres by the Calgary Chamber Players. His compositions attempt to address the gap between contemporary concert music and its potential audience. In June George accepted the position of Artistic Director with the Land`s End Chamber Music Society. He currently works in the library of the Canadian Music Centre, Prairie Region, and is a member of several ensembles including the Calgary Chamber Players, the Sunrise String Quartet and the Symphonie of the Kootenays.
