Composers’ Competition

Land’s End Chamber Music Society of Calgary is proud to announce our third annual Composers’ Competition. This competition is designed to recognize and promote the creative talents of local emerging composers, as well as to provide a learning experience and performance opportunity with a professional performance ensemble. The competition is open to all undergraduate and graduate composition students currently enrolled in the University of Calgary, University of Alberta, and University of Lethbridge Departments of Music.

Rules and Regulations

  • Each composer may submit only one work.

The submission should consist of one full score and performance parts. The score and parts must be professionally rendered and bound.

The work must be scored for piano trio (piano, violin and cello) or any two of those instruments.

The duration of the work should be from 4 to 7 minutes.

The submission must be an original, uncommissioned and unpublished work with no previous public performance.

It is recommended that the applicant also submit a cassette tape or CD of an acoustic reading or computer realization of the score. The cassette or CD must be clearly labeled with the title of the composition, and the noise-reduction used in the recording.

Scores and tapes should not be identified by name in order to preserve anonymity. Personal details, including mailing address and phone number, should be included in a separate cover letter with the submission.

Deadline: Submissions must be postmarked no later than February 20, 2001.

The submitted compositions will be judged by a three member jury comprised of respected members of the Alberta music community who are not directly associated with the U of C, U of A, or U of L. An announcement will be posted naming the members of the jury once the panel has been formed.

The jury will select a number of works from the entries to be read and discussed in an open workshop (date to be announced) on the U of C campus. The composers whose works have been selected will be contacted no later than March 1, 2001. The entrants who are selected to participate in the workshop must travel to Calgary at their own expense.

Following the workshop, a winner will be announced. The prize will be the world premiere of the work by Land's End Chamber Ensemble in our spring concert (March 23, 2001 in the Eckhardt-Gramatte Hall, the Rozsa Centre, on the U of C campus), and a CD recording of the performance.

    No application fee is required.

All decisions of the judges are final.
